5 Reasons Why You Need A Mission Statement

Articles September 20, 2022

Mission Statements really matter despite the perception that they are just a nice to have afterthought. Creating your Mission Statement should force you to answer some fundamental questions about, who you are and why you turn up. Done properly it can be the foundation of your business or non-profit.

Here are the five reasons:

  1. Fulfilling you Mission is the motivating factor that gets you and your employees up in the morning. Why do it if it’s not worth doing. Life is finite.
  2. It  tells the world why they should engage with you, why you are different.
  3. It is the first step in creating a plan for your business, and also the starting line for creating a Roadmap for your business. The Mission is the reason to start out on the journey to your Vision.
  4. If you don’t have a Mission Statement you are not thinking about your business strategically.
  5. A good Statement defines your uniqueness, your approach to standing out in the crowd.

For those of you who are still questioning the need for a Mission Statement. Ask yourself; why would someone want to do business with you if you’re not even sure why you are in business?

A Mission Statement should be based on the answers to some, or all, of the following questions:

  • Who are we?
  • What do we do?
  • Who do we do it to?
  • How do we do it – what’s our style or differentiator?
  • What is the end results?

Think about your current company or one you most recently worked with and quickly write down the first thing that comes to mind for each question.

Did you come up with something that is?:

  • Achievable – we can do it!
  • Believable – our customers believe we can do it!
  • Motivational – we want to do it!
  • Written in the language of your customer or the group or entity receiving your service or product.
